August 31, The day before the run. We rode the Silver Mountain Gondola (world's Longest). People take their mountain bikes up to ri(ie the many trails. Back at the motel patio we were treated with a baked potatoe and all the toppings. Luncheon entertainment was a muscial duet of accordian, violin, spoons and washboard.
The Spokane and Seattle Clubs have take-a-part cars, assembled by teams of 6 are timed. The record being 2:57. Seattle team of men today did i-t in 3:10, Spokane-.-2:57. Then they traded cars: Spokane 2:10. The Spokane's women's team went unchallenged today 5:55. A
team member had failed to turn the gas on&-the young,, la.dy was cranking away and nothing happened.
RJ Steed and Mary PfcConnell, dressed in nun habits, gave a,blessing on the event. They were the Sisters of Chassis.
A short tour in the afternoon gave us a historic view of the area. We toured to Wallace. All this area was a treat mining area of Silver, Lead and Zinc. At one time the largest silver mine in the USA was here. Some is still being mined today but not much. Gold was discovered in 1882.
Bob and I toured the Northern Pacific Depot museum, a chateau style. The most talked about building  was the Oasis Booms. A bordello that operated until 1988. Some of our members visited the second floor, where all the activity had occurred. ' It remains virtually unchanged from the day the occupants departed, leaving everything intact.
After the short trip to Wallace, there were a number of cars having to be adjusted. We had a head gasket leak that was fixed by using stop leak. Our carburetor cap is unique. "What kind of air cleaner is that?" and "I -like your breather cap." I respond with "It's a Dole", crushed pineapple can."
On to the Hills of Idaho run. The map of 200 miles came with a printed list of all turns. What a great help it was. Along, with the customary right, left, proceed there was a "soft left". The morning coffee break was a branch. I was beginning to feel cold by now but I didn't realize how  cold till I sat down to eat. I shivered and shivered. With a cup of tea to wrap my fingers around and to drink slowly/to warm my innards, I was warmed up in no time and we were on the road again.
Out in the Hills of Idaho on forest road, 3097and no one in front of us or behind we find an intersection of five roads and this instruction of "soft left". The roads were clearly marked, but with no one, in front or behind us Bob asked, "are you sure we're on the right road?" I was sure, but why couldn't I see the typical oil drips from model T's? And then we came to people out here in the middle of nowhere. We had a creek to ford! At this check point was Judy Wisher and instructions to stay 'to the right of the "man who walks on water", Hank Bell. It was wonderful to see people, we were on the right road.
Historic points of interest were included in our score as well as the usual check Points. These Hills of Idaho have. a lot of History. The Cataldo Mission, oldest building, in Idaho, Sunken Lake and the Sunshine Disaster Memorial are a few.
We had finished our sack lunch at Gloria's in the Hills of Idaho, and had to go up one of these hills, Beaver Creek Road. We were going up and up on this paved road and I wondered when we'd get to the top. I kept thinking just around this curve, the next curve, it was never ending and then the car just didn't have power. Bob said, "this doesn't sound good, does it'?" No. we turned around and coasted to a pull out so we could load on a trouble trailer. We were down at 3:45 and the finish time was, 4:25:37. So close to finishing.

Our other problem occurred on Coeur d'Alene Lake Drive. The horn had broken and shorted out the battery. There was still enough charge to run the fuel pump but not the starter. We either had to get a tow start or in the Hills of Idaho we could coast to start.

When we broke down with something in the engine, we didn't get to see the unique hotel in Burke. It was built over the railroad and the road and creek !  I wish that we could have seen it.
Results of the day were revealed at the banquet. This is the third year of the Vern Storey award and it was received by Jim Patterson :  The Dream Lives On".  There were 50 registered cars and 9 of these had trouble. The trouble trophy went to Mike and Judy Constantino.  They had 3 flats : two tubes, 2 Flaps, One Tire.
The Hills of Idaho run is over. It was very well organized by Jim and Betty Patterson to whom we all say THANK YOU !!!
