The fourth annual Memorial Day speedster run was held in Richland, WA at the Tower Inn. Herb Mettler set the tour route with Frank & Barbara Baker and Ed & Joanne Jepperson sharing the chairmenship. The Tri Cities Model T Club's participation was evident as they were everywhere making sure we were treated well while we were their guests.
The day proved to be warm with inspection of the speedsters held in the back parking lot. A late afternoon tour of some of the sights of the area was led by Palmer Knutsen, a Tri Cities Model T member. The Tri Cities Model T Club ladies provided tables filled with the best food ever for us to enjoy in the hospitality room. The room was adjacent to a large covered court yard where one could sit and visit, swim or enjoy the relaxing area. It was the favorite hangout of many. Rooms were centered around the courtyard. One had only to open their slider to enter the area. Dinner that evening was on your own.
The starting flag dropped at 8:00 A.M. and participants knew it would be a warm day. At lunch, which was held in Lind, WA, many were commenting about the morning route, they enjoyed it but had no idea where they were and had not known all morning. Would someone give them a clue?
When participants received their lunches at Lind, they were told that six of the lunches contained hot Jalapeno peppers. If one received a pepper they should bring it to the banquet for a small cash reward. If you ate the pepper at the banquet your reward was greater. That evening at the banquet MC Ed Jepperson asked the people receiving the six Jalapeno peppers to please stand up. Approximately half of the people attending the banquet stood up. Much to Ed's amazement, he was speechless. It was then revealed that Gary Hofer, who else but, had gone around town buying all the Jalapeno peppers he could find and distributed them. When the banquet hall quieted down, the six holders of the peppers came forward. Only one of the six chose to eat their pepper for the greater reward. Rae Ann and Wayne Murray's son Donovan, who was his dad's navagitor for the run, stepped forward and ate the pepper. He found the pepper to be very hot for the greater reward he received, but provided many smiles and laughs for the crowd.
The winner of the Jalapeno Fun Run was Rudy and Phyllis Saarela. It could have not been a more appropriate win, as Rudy and Phyllis now have her father's speedster. Just prior to the Jalapeno Fun Run, Phyllis's father passed away. They dedicated the run that day to her father, a well deserved win it was.
