The run was held on Sunday, June 23 with eight speedsters in attendance meeting at the North Plains McDonald’s for a 9:30 send off.  Present were;

#10 Car was driven by Rick Oldford and navigated by his son Josh.
#27 Bob Rankin brought R.J. Genco, his son in law as his mechanic
#69 Pete Daun in brought his son Brandon to steer him along
#72 Bill Hills with his grandson Cody navigating.
#104 Jock Stoll and his daughter Gail Lovell piloted
#105 New member Ken Montgomery joined us in his recently acquired #105
#130 Don Shreve had the ever steady Tim Knapp with him
#180 A Chevy, Steve Weber and his reluctant director of navigation, Steve Broderick
Stacey and Sharlene Hills put together a nice route that took in a big loop west from NorthPlains circling David’s Hill north of Forest Grove and coming out at Balm Grove near Gales Creek. This stretch the run included a now infamous detour onto a road that showed on the map but apparently forgot to be built as a number of us ended up on a farmer’s property down at the bottom of an orchard on very little of a path. After lots of conversation, a few phone calls and some direction from the tour master, we all got back on track. This little detour would probably remind some of you old timers about the run that Don Babbitt put on where a lot of you ended up ‘down in the hole’, fording dry creek beds and fighting the brush!! He must have been laughing from above at this little fiasco!! On into Forest Grove we went via the top of David’s Hill and to a nice park where a coffee break was a welcome sight.
Next we were out south of Forest Grove, over Springhill and Dixon Mill to Firdale, Hwy 219 to Burkhalter and eventually to Brookwood up to Logie Trail, Skyline, Dixie Mountain Rd and on to Bill and Jan Hills homestead for some great bench racing, BBQ and refreshments of choice.
Discussion was held about how to prod more members to participate in this annual event and I suggested that perhaps the specter of having to do the next years event if you won might be keeping people away. So I made this proposal and will reiterate it next year when the time is right….if the winner doesn’t want to put on the next years run, I will do so in their place. So, this should eliminate one obstacle to the participation issue.
After many discussions on any number of topics, we got to the presentation of the perpetual trophy by Stacey.

I have to say that in the true spirit of the Hot 100 and Don Babbitts’ tendency toward the pedal to the metal, my ride with Steve Weber held true to the spirit of this event. Steve obviously loves to drive and some of our gravel drifts and tire squeals were reminiscent of many rides with ol’ BBR in #30. It was a truly enjoyable ride..even if it was a Chevrolet!! Thanks Mr. Weber.

See you all later.

Steve Broderick
