Boat Tail was preferred more than 2:1 over the other designs. I've decided to build the Boat Tail pictured above. Click here for more pictures. It is a compromise 2/3 (10") Boat Tail 6" off the Frame which is between the Full (16") Boat Tail (53% Boat Tailers picked) and the High (4" off Frame) Half (8") Boat Tail (37% Boat Tailers picked). My friend Bruce pointed out that some compromise between those designs was probably the right thing. Bob Heistuman's has to watch that he doesn't hit the bottom rear with his Speedster and raising the tail should help eliminate this problem. Several speedster owners favored the Full Boat Tail commenting on the need for storage space. This design gives the same storage space as the Full Boat Tail. |

I added a curve at the rear of the cockpit cut out after Art & Frank pointed out it would look better. I've yet to improve the forward curve, but I know it needs work. Our discussion also pointed out that the Boat Tail is drawn in a classical way, but that more modern vehicles have a higher body rear of the seat giving the body more rake which is the modern idiom. I'll go for classical, but its good to be aware of. |

My friend Carl pointed out that mixed or edge planking risked looking too busy. I think he is right, but the planks have to resolve someplace and the edge planking makes them resolve in the least construction risk place.... also with all planks of matching wood, the busyness should be muted. |

Several people said that the Model A was the wrong car for a Roadster Body... it needed a lower V8 chassis.... I thought that was correct. A couple of people wanted the car shortened or lengthened... I thought it was as short as it could be and still bend the rear deck planks... and any longer and it risked looking rear end heavy. A couple of people commented that they would like a concave sided skiff like '23 Amilcar .... the Model A frame is too wide at the rear to get the concave sides, but I think they are right. My first impression was between the Boat Tail and the Roadster. The survey helped me understand why I liked the Boat Tail. |
