Planking

I made a big mistake. I didn't think about planking and trim patterns until after I had cut out the Strong Back.  When I finally thought about the trim, I had to change the design from the 2/3 Boat Tail Design to the Full Boat Tail Design below.

The problem was the bottom rear.  The accent stripes should accentuate the natural lines of the car.  It was clear from the Side Planking pictures that a top of frame height stripe was desirable, but with the 2/3 boat tail it did not resolve gracefully at the rear.

I had to recut stations 12 and 13 to re-shape the rear into a Full Boat Tail. With all the affected pieces that meant 2 sheets of plywood.
I chose to use 3 woods -- all old growth cedar from Canada or Alaska :
Red Cedar
Dark Red Cedar
Yellow Cedar

Yellow cedar will be used for most of the speedster body.  Yellow cedar is slightly heavier, but if the body gets rock dings, they will show up less than they would on a darker wood.

All the planks are 1/4" thick, bead & cove and are available in 7/8" wide or 1/2" wide.  7/8" planks will be used for whole car.
1/2" planks will be used for accent stripes

1/2" planks are also used for sharp curves on stations 12 &13.

There are decisions that have to be made about body color and trim for both the Top and Sides. And there is a decision on how to treat the Tail.
