The Golden Age Of Wood Bodied Cars |
The best pictures of wood car bodies are collected on oldwoodies.com. The Golden Age was 1920-1939. Custom Coach builders built them for beauty and for light weight racing bodies. There were Skiffs, Canoes, Boat Tails, Shooting Brakes, and all kinds of oddities. |
The cream of the crop are the racers.... especially the 1924 Hispano Suiza and the 1939 Lagano V12 Rapide. The light bodies made fast cars. |
Both these cars appear to have been built like Maine Guide Canoes. A mould was created. Metal strips were laid over the mold where the ribs would go. Then the planks were tacked to the ribs using Canoe Tacks. |
Canoe Tacks are cut diagonally so when they hit the metal strip the point bends around forming a "J" and crimping the rib to the plank. |
The best book on this construction technique is Jerry Stilmok's The Wood and Canvas Canoe |
