Top Planking Patterns

Planks have slightly different widths so getting both sides of a football shaped planking pattern to meet is very difficult.  The bow of the kayak illustrates the problem. The solution is to run at least a few planks down the center line. This separates the plank ends so the difference does not catch your eye.  Running most planks parallel to the center line as on the kayak may make the speedster easier to plank.

Since the planks cannot guarantee to be completely symmetrical, I ruled out a football shaped racing stripe.  I believe the planks will be symmetrical enough so you will not notice the slight difference in the top side stripe from side to side.

This left a decision about how wide and bold the center Racing Stripe should be.  Here are 2 alternatives

The thinner stripe (top picture) is made of 3 pieces half an inch wide.... possibly with some light 7/8" planks paralleling on either side.  The bottom picture shows 3 pieces 1/2" wide and 2 dark pieces 7/8" wide.  I favor the thinner stripe in the top picture... partly because I think the stripe looks better when it is thinner than the diameter of the radiator cap.
