Should the Frame be Narrowed ? |
How Wide a Rear Body Do You Want ? | ||
Wide | Narrow | |
At the elevation of the Frame, the mid speedster body needs to be at least wide enough to miss the clutch (34"), wide enough for the seat (38"min, 40" better), and wide enough to clear the frame (39.5" stock, 28" narrowed). Typically Speedster bodies end about 30" back of the center of the rear axle (24"min, 36"max). At least 80% (probably 90%) of all Boat Tail Speedsters are narrowed. Look at a longitudinal curve on a 39.5" Stock Frame and a 28" Narrowed Frame. |

A Wide Body on a Stock Frame 39.5" wide at the rear
The above drawing shows a frame level elevation curve that connects a point 30" aft of the rear axle to the radiator shell while clearing the stock frame. There are many curves that meet these tests. The good curves are 3 degree curves that do not change direction, do not develop a radius less then 30" and stay close to the frame and seat. This would produce a speedster like a the wide one above. The controlling Mid-Car Curve would be at least as far back as the Rear Axle. |

A Narrow Body on a 28" Narrowed Frame |
The above drawing shows the same curve for a Frame Narrowed to 28" in the Rear. I thought the shape of the narrowed body was much nicer so I decided to narrow the Frame. Here is the revised Chassis Model.
And the same model with floorboards, gas tank, and firewall. These will be cut back to the body after the body is designed. |
