The strips are coated with fiberglass cloth and
epoxy.
To understand this process read Rip, Strip, & Row The fiberglass cloth and epoxy hold the planks in position which is what maintains the shape. During construction hot melt glue is placed between the planks to assist holding the planks in place. Wood is not dimensionally stable. Even when it is coated with epoxy, the wood will lose moisture through the epoxy when hot and absorb moisture when cold. Usually this is a summer/winter phenomenon. Engine and exhaust heat changes this. When Epoxy gets warm it creeps. Creep is a complex function involving temperature, load, and glass transition temperature (Tg). There is no threshold temperature where creep becomes a problem. More heat is bad. Creep will let the body lose shape. There are 2 major suppliers of Epoxy : System Three and West System. Both are really good. Work with the one that you or your mentor are most familiar with. I used West System's Epoxy... not the quick cure hardner --- the slower one. System Three recommends their Phase Two Epoxy. It is clear that heat is to be avoided. The exhaust needs heat shielding and needs to run under the car. The hood needs insulation on its under side and the Radiator top needs a heat shield. |
